BITCOIN PUT SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS BETWEEN TUESDAY AND SATURDAY — AND THE HIGH DIED THIRTY-EIGHT DOLLARS SHORT OF A ROUND NUMBER
The week's low was $74,951.01 on Tuesday, September 15. The week's high was $81,961.63 on Saturday, September 19. That is $7,010.62, up 9.35 percent, and it took just under four days. Anyone selling you an overnight comeback is selling you a shorter story than the one that happened.
The high stopped $38.37 below $82,000. Round numbers get called walls after the fact by people who needed a wall. Thirty-eight dollars short is not a test of a level, it is a coincidence with good marketing.
What is worth your attention is who got carried out, and in which direction, twice. On September 16 roughly $571 million of long positions were liquidated against about $100 million of shorts, the biggest long tally since August 22. Two days later the machine ran backwards: of $547 million liquidated on September 18, $469 million of it was shorts. Same week, same instrument, both sides taken out in seventy-two hours.
That is what leverage does in a range. It is not a market picking a direction, it is a market charging admission both ways. The spot holder with keys sat through all of it and owns exactly what they owned on Monday. As of this writing the run is not still standing either: price is $1,274 below Saturday's high.
