BLOCK PUT LIGHTNING INTO X402, THE AI AGENT PAYMENT STANDARD — THE FOUNDATION WENT OPERATIONAL IN JULY WITH 40 MEMBERS INCLUDING VISA, MASTERCARD, AMERICAN EXPRESS, STRIPE AND CIRCLE — THAT LAUNCH ANNOUNCEMENT DID NOT MENTION BITCOIN ONCE

Block said on September 24 that it joined the x402 Foundation and added bitcoin Lightning support to the standard. Steve Lee, who runs Block’s bitcoin arm Spiral, called it a concrete step toward making bitcoin everyday money for people and the agents acting on their behalf. Fine. Now read the launch announcement.

The x402 Foundation went operational on July 14 under the Linux Foundation with 40 member organizations, the protocol contributed by Coinbase. The premier tier is Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Stripe, Adyen, Fiserv, Circle, Ripple, Shopify, Google, Amazon Web Services, Cloudflare, Coinbase and the Solana Foundation. Neither bitcoin nor Lightning appears anywhere in that announcement, and Block is not on that member list.

So the sequence tells you more than the headline does. The standard for how software agents pay each other was set up in July by the companies that already run card rails and stablecoins. Bitcoin arrived in September as one payment option inside a design somebody else had finished. The protocol being open is the part that is checkable. A foundation with a member tier list is the part that is not.

Lightning is the only settlement on that menu that does not depend on a company staying willing. Every other option is a claim on an issuer who can freeze it, and an agent spending money on your behalf will not know the difference unless somebody makes it know. That is the argument Block now has to win from inside the room instead of outside it. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $84,115.
