CORNELL’S BITCOIN ADOPTION INDEX — 25,880 ADULTS IN 25 COUNTRIES — ABOUT 13% KNEW BITCOIN’S SUPPLY STOPS AT 21 MILLION

Cornell University's Tech Policy Institute, at the Brooks School of Public Policy, published a Bitcoin Adoption Index built on a Morning Consult survey of 25,880 adults in 25 countries. The answers were collected from December 2024 to March 2025, so they are about a year and a half old. Bitcoin Magazine covered the report on October 2, 2026.

The report estimates that 13.2% of adults across the sample own bitcoin. On the one rule that defines bitcoin, it finds only about 13% knew the supply is capped at 21 million.

So roughly as many people own it as understand its limit, and they are not necessarily the same people. Bitcoin Magazine's read of the report is that ownership runs highest where the local currency has been unstable and good banking is hard to get. People there reach for it because their own money keeps shrinking.

The cap is the whole point. A central bank can always print more of its currency. Nobody can print the twenty-one-million-and-first bitcoin, whether the holder knows that or not. Twenty-one million is still twenty-one million. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $84,895.
