THIS YEAR'S DEFICIT IS $1.97 TRILLION WITH ONE MONTH STILL TO GO — $1.267 TRILLION OF IT WAS INTEREST — 64 CENTS OF EVERY DOLLAR BORROWED THIS YEAR WENT TO PAY FOR WHAT WAS BORROWED BEFORE
Eleven months into the fiscal year the federal deficit is $1.97 trillion. Interest on the debt over those same eleven months is $1.267 trillion.
Divide one by the other. Sixty-four percent. Of every dollar the government borrowed this year, sixty-four cents went to paying for what it had already borrowed. That is not a spending programme. That is the cover charge.
One thing worth separating, because these two get mixed up constantly and the confusion protects the number. This is the deficit, not the debt. The deficit is what gets borrowed in a single year. The debt is everything ever borrowed and never repaid, and debt held by the public stood at $31.9 trillion at the end of July. The $1.267 trillion is what carrying that pile cost for eleven months.
August alone: $360 billion in, $527 billion out, a $166.8 billion hole in thirty-one days. Interest is up $111 billion on the year, twelve percent, and on a trailing twelve-month basis it has now set a record. The Congressional Budget Office puts the eleven-month deficit at $2 trillion using its own method, which is a different arithmetic reaching the same place.
Now the part that happened this afternoon. At 3:08 today the President restated the $5,000 payment to every adult in the United States, and offered as proof of his delivery record the Great Big Beautiful Bill. The CBO's report on this same eleven-month period says corporate income tax receipts fell $96 billion, twenty-five percent, because of the tax changes in that bill.
So the evidence offered that the money will arrive is the law that took $96 billion out of the column the money would have come from. Both of those things are true at once and nobody has to resolve them, because a promise does not have to balance.
Twenty-one million. That is the whole of it. No eleven-month figure, no trailing twelve-month revision, no adjusted-for-timing footnote, no method that reaches a different number. Nobody borrows against it and nobody pays interest on it, because there is no one to pay and nothing was borrowed. It is the only number in this story that will read the same in September 2027.
