On Oct 15, 2026, Google Quantum AI said a method called magic state cultivation cut errors about 40 times on its Willow chip. The blog post, by Emma Rosenfeld and Craig Gidney, reports "a record logical fidelity of 99.99%" for T-states, the special inputs a quantum computer burns to run hard programs. It says "up to 95% of a quantum computer's entire capacity might need to be dedicated to making them."

Here is why a bitcoin holder should care. On March 30, 2026, a Google Quantum AI paper with Gidney among its authors estimated that breaking the elliptic curve keys behind bitcoin signatures "could be realized with fewer than half a million physical qubits," and it set aside 25,000 of those qubits for making magic states. The coins at risk if that machine is ever built are the ones whose public keys are already on chain, from reused addresses and old outputs.

Now the checkable part versus the trusted part. The new post never mentions encryption, keys or bitcoin. That link comes from the March paper and from the outlets. What you can check is narrow: a lab result on one part of the pipeline, a 40 fold drop in errors on the input the attack eats. The authors write that "we still need to demonstrate magic state cultivation at a larger scale" and that "plenty of technical challenges remain." No one has shown a machine that does the whole job.

The fix on the bitcoin side is also checkable, and it moves slower than a lab. Moving coins to fresh addresses and agreeing on a post-quantum signature takes users and node operators, not a blog post. Each result like this one makes the case for waiting a little weaker.
