GRAYSCALE OPENS IN-KIND SUBSCRIPTIONS — ABOUT $364,800 OF BITCOIN BUYS BITCOIN MINI TRUST SHARES — THE RELEASE PITCHES CUSTODY OVER SELF-CUSTODY AND NAMES NO WAY BACK TO COINS

On October 21, 2026, Grayscale said eligible investors can now “contribute an underlying digital asset directly in exchange for shares of a Grayscale product.” Ten products are on the list. For the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF, ticker BTC, the approximate minimum is $364,800, at October 20 prices. You do not deal with Grayscale directly. You go through an Authorized Participant “or another conduit to an Authorized Participant,” and pay facilitator fees the release does not name.

The pitch is about your keys. Steve Vanourny, Grayscale’s head of index, said: “With growing cybersecurity threats, including self-custody and DeFi exploits, institutional custody is increasingly valuable.” The release says contributing coins lets investors “reduce the operational burden of self-custody.” It also says the shares “may also be eligible for use as margin or collateral.”

Now read the fine print at the bottom of the same release. “The Custodian controls and secures an ETP’s digital asset accounts, a segregated custody account to store private keys.” It lists “potential loss from transfer errors or custody failures.” And it says plainly: “An investment in the ETPs is not a direct investment in any cryptocurrency.” The trust’s prospectus dated September 12, 2025 names Coinbase Custody Trust Company as custodian and calls the shares “not individually redeemable securities.”

The release describes a door in. It says nothing about a door back out to coins in your own wallet. Before, you held a key and nobody could pledge it but you. After, you hold a share in a trust whose keys sit with a custodian, and the share can be lent against. That trade may suit some people. Just call it what it is: you give up the coin and get a claim on it. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $84,697.
