THE INHERITANCE TIME BOMB — SELF-CUSTODY'S NEXT REGRET ISN'T THE FIRMWARE, IT'S THE ESTATE PLAN.
"The keys you defended for a decade are the same keys nobody knows how to spend when you're gone."
— the operator-grade read on the succession problem
— the operator-grade read on the succession problem
Cryptoslate's read on 2026 lands where the sovereignty class has been reluctant to look: the largest structural weakness in the self-custody stack is no longer the hardware. It is succession. The first cohort of self-custodied Bitcoin holders is now aging into estate-planning territory. The wallets they defended through a decade of hacks, phishing, supply-chain scares and now the Coldcard entropy exploit are the same wallets their heirs have to inherit, verify, and spend — on a timeline that assumes they can find the seed, understand the quorum, and coordinate the co-signers without ever having seen the wallet before.
The Maximalist read is sober. Multisig is the correct answer to single-device firmware risk. It is not the correct answer to succession by default. A 2-of-3 quorum with keys held on Coldcard, TAPSIGNER, and a hosted collaborative custodian is a robust anti-theft configuration and a fragile inheritance configuration — because it silently assumes that whoever inherits the estate knows which three keys existed, where they were, and how to reconstitute the quorum in the presence of two of them. The operator who set the quorum knows this. The heir usually does not.
The tooling class knows this too. Nunchuk has been shipping inheritance-specific hardware key options for years. Casa built its business on family-office-grade multisig with named recovery paths. Unchained pairs collaborative-custody keys with an explicit legal wrapper. The problem is not that the tools do not exist. The problem is that adoption of the tools inside the self-custodied population is much lower than adoption of the raw wallets, because inheritance planning is one of the most reliably deferred adult tasks in existence, and it is even more deferred when the asset in question is a bearer instrument you cannot casually explain to your attorney.
The compass read for the operator class: the Coldcard exploit was a firmware failure with a $89 million price tag across 4,585 addresses. The next quiet failure is a succession failure — one operator at a time, invisible to the tape, invisible to headlines, permanent to the estate. The response is not to abandon self-custody. It is to treat the inheritance layer as production code. Document the quorum. Distribute the seed shards with geographic and social redundancy. Name the co-signers. Rehearse the recovery. The cap is still twenty-one million. It stays yours if it can be passed.
The firmware was the last regret.
The estate plan is the next.
