Ledger, Trezor, and Block’s Bitkey all put statements on the record within 48 hours of the drain surfacing. Ledger’s position: its Bitcoin hardware wallets use a 256-bit mathematical complexity entropy system that’s not the same architecture as ColdCard’s TRNG stack, and Ledger devices are “not affected.” Trezor said flat: it doesn’t share the code path that failed. Bitkey engineer Clay Garrett told users to “continue to use your Bitkey normally.” Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong used the moment to point at air-gapping keys as the operational-standard reference — the same discipline his firm applies to crypto-ETF custody.

The differentiation matters at the technical layer. ColdCard’s failure was a build-flag mistake that silently substituted a software PRNG seeded from the chip’s serial number and clock registers for the hardware TRNG. Ledger and Trezor each use different entropy pipelines with different verification steps. That doesn’t make them immune to their own future flaws — hardware is hardware, firmware is firmware, and any device with code can carry a bug. But it does mean this specific failure mode is specific.
