NASDAQ PUT $100 MILLION INTO KRAKEN’S PARENT — THE EXCHANGE THAT CLOSES AT FOUR JUST BOUGHT A PIECE OF ONE THAT NEVER DOES

Nasdaq Ventures put $100 million into Payward, the company that owns Kraken, on September 10, 2026. Bloomberg and CoinDesk both put a $21 billion value on Payward in the deal. Nasdaq’s own release does not name a value. What the release does name is the plan: Nasdaq Equity Tokens, due in the second quarter of 2027, and Payward running Nasdaq’s market surveillance software across its crypto, stock, tokenized stock, futures and options venues.

Read it like a filing, not like news. The company that opens at 9:30 and closes at 4:00 bought a stake in a venue that does not close, and sold that venue its own referee. Wells Fargo advised on the deal. Nobody at Nasdaq is confused about which way this runs.

Who profits: Nasdaq, either way. If tokenized stock trading stays small, it is out $100 million, which is a rounding error at that size. If it gets big, Nasdaq owns the token standard, the watchdog software and a piece of the exchange.

A Nasdaq Equity Token is still a share of a company. There is an issuer, a registry, a transfer agent and a rule about who may hold it. Putting it on rails that stay open all night changes the hours. It does not change who can switch it off. That is the whole difference between something that settles and something that is yours.
