UK TAX AGENCY SENT 81,000 WARNING LETTERS TO CRYPTO INVESTORS THIS YEAR. THEY WILL SEE YOUR OFFSHORE ACCOUNTS IN 2027.
Fifty-two countries will start sharing crypto user data with the UK next year. Offshore does not mean invisible anymore.
The UK tax agency sent 81,000 warning letters to crypto investors in the past 12 months. That is up 25 percent from the year before. Three years ago they only sent 27,714 letters. The trajectory is straight up. The letters give you a chance to disclose what you owe before they open a real investigation.
The bigger news lands in 2027. Fifty-two countries will start sharing crypto user data with the UK next year. Fifteen more countries join in 2028. This is called the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework. Any exchange in a participating country has to send in information about UK residents using their platform. The offshore-exchange escape hatch just got a closing date.
A partner at UHY Hacker Young put it plainly: “There is the expectation amongst tax authorities that cryptocurrency investment is rife with tax evasion.” That is the working assumption they are auditing you against. The UK Financial Conduct Authority also raided 8 illegal peer-to-peer crypto trading sites in April.
