Zeus, one of the most-used self-custodial Lightning wallets, took its infrastructure offline following a cybersecurity incident disclosed August 5. The team confirmed the attack was contained, no customer funds were lost, and users whose channels closed during the incident will receive replacement channels once services resume. Zeus is the third Lightning-adjacent service to suspend operations in seven days — following Boltz, which halted mainchain, Lightning, and Liquid swap services indefinitely August 3 citing AI-assisted attacks that outpaced its patching capacity, and Aqua, which paused downstream after losing Boltz as its swap counterparty.

The Maximalist read is sober. The HTLC-based non-custodial architecture worked. User keys were never at risk. The bearer property of Bitcoin held. What the cascade exposes is not custody failure — it is dependency failure. The Lightning L2 stack was quietly built on a smaller number of infrastructure operators than the marketing suggested. Boltz was doing the swap plumbing for a meaningful share of the ecosystem. Zeus was routing over infrastructure that presented a coherent enough attack surface for a coordinated adversary. When one node in that graph goes down, downstream wallets go dark.

The AI-assisted attacker paradigm changes the risk gradient. Boltz's own post-mortem read as an admission: a small open-source team cannot patch as fast as an automated adversary can probe, and the economics of defense against an untiring attacker do not close. Zeus's incident is a separate event but the same category. The sovereignty class is being told, quietly, that the L2 layer of Bitcoin is currently defended by a handful of small teams and that the attacker economics have shifted.

What the operator class does with this: verify the L1 fallback. If your Lightning wallet cannot spend on-chain when the L2 rails go down, it is not sovereign, it is fair-weather. Nodes that route through Boltz-adjacent infrastructure need to know it. The operators who ran their own node, kept L1 UTXOs available, and treated Lightning as a payment layer rather than a custody layer are the ones who stayed liquid this week. The cap is still twenty-one million. The rails are the risk.
