‘I’M BACK’ — ASSANGE WALKS ONTO A PLATFORM THAT CAN BAN HIM — THE BITCOIN THAT BEAT HIS BANK BLOCKADE HAS NO OFF SWITCH

Julian Assange typed two words on X on September 17 — “I’m back” — over a new photo in Sydney. It was his first post in his own name in about eight years; through his imprisonment and release the account had kept posting without him, and the outlets that read this one say he gave no reason for the timing. Here is the reason the maximalists care. He walked back onto a platform that can lock his account with one click, run by a company that answers to governments and advertisers. He has been on the other side of that switch. In December 2010, after WikiLeaks published the cables, the payments industry pulled the plug in weeks: PayPal on December 3, Visa and Mastercard on December 7, Bank of America on December 18, Western Union on December 21. WikiLeaks says the blockade destroyed 95% of its revenue. No court had convicted anyone; the card networks simply decided, and the money stopped.

So WikiLeaks reached for the one rail no board could shut, and began taking bitcoin donations in 2011. Satoshi Nakamoto had watched it come: on December 11, 2010 he wrote, “WikiLeaks has kicked the hornet’s nest, and the swarm is headed towards us.” That is the whole lesson. X can ban Assange. Visa can cut him off again. A private key does neither — a platform is a permission someone grants, and a key is a thing you hold. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $80,686.
