BITCOIN OPTIONS BOOK SHOWS $44 BILLION IN BETS — CALLS STILL WIN THE COUNT, BUT FRESH MONEY IS BUYING PUTS INTO SEPTEMBER
Bitcoin’s derivatives book is carrying $54.82 billion in futures open interest and another $44 billion in options heading into September. Read the positions, not the noise. Calls still own the outstanding book — 61% of it, 288,410 bitcoin worth — stacked at strikes from $70,000 to $100,000 through September and December. That’s conviction placed weeks ago. But look at what traded in the last 24 hours: puts outpaced calls, 12,381 bitcoin to 10,340. That’s not conviction. That’s hedging, and it’s happening now, with spot sitting at $78,425. Max pain — the price where the most contracts expire worthless — sits at or below spot on every major venue: $78,500 on Deribit and Binance for Tuesday, sliding to $70,000–$73,000 by the September 25 expiry. An operator doesn’t read that as bearish. An operator reads it as a market that priced in upside weeks ago and is now buying insurance on the way there. The calls are the position. The puts are the seatbelt. Both can be true on the same balance sheet, and only one of them tells you what happens if September goes wrong instead of right.
