THE US ADDED 29,000 JOBS IN SEPTEMBER AGAINST A 90,000 FORECAST — JULY REVISED TO A LOSS OF 10,000 — PAY UP 3.0% IN A YEAR — BITCOIN TOPS $87,000

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said on October 2, 2026 that the US added 29,000 jobs in September. CoinDesk puts the forecast at 90,000. July was revised from a gain of 21,000 to a loss of 10,000, and August from 162,000 to 133,000. Unemployment was 4.2%.

The Fed raised rates on September 16. Average hourly pay rose 3.0% over the last twelve months, to $37.81. The Fed's favorite price gauge was up 3.4% in the year to August, as we reported on September 30. Paychecks are rising slower than prices.

CoinDesk reports the 10-year Treasury yield fell to 5.17% after the release. The New York Times reports the odds of a rate change at the Fed's late-October meeting dropped. Bitcoin topped $87,000 on Friday, its highest since September 23, The Block reports.

So the Fed made money more expensive while hiring was already stalling, and the dollar it guards is losing ground to prices. Bitcoin moved up on the chance that the people running the dollar have to back off. Its supply did not move at all. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $84,112.
