BitMEX announced Thursday that it will shut down September 23. HDR Global Trading Limited, the parent company, said its board completed a strategic review of the business and the broader crypto industry and decided to close. Users have been told to withdraw funds "as soon as practical." After September 23, the exchange holds client assets only until withdrawal — no more services. The Maximalist read: BitMEX pioneered crypto derivatives when nobody else would touch them, and it's exiting with its own words about the industry it helped build. Its final statement claims the platform stayed "grounded to the true ethos of Bitcoin — neutrality, transparency, and decentralisation." That's the story: an exchange telling its users to self-custody as its final act. Bitcoin doesn't need BitMEX. It never did. Every exchange sunset is the same lesson repeated: your keys or their promise.
