BITWISE IS SHUTTING ITS DOGECOIN ETF TEN AND A HALF MONTHS AFTER LAUNCH — IT HOLDS $722,000 — THAT IS A QUARTER OF ONE PERCENT OF WHAT LEFT THE BITCOIN ETFS IN A SINGLE DAY

Bitwise launched a dogecoin ETF on November 26 last year. Its last day of trading is October 14. Holders get cash on October 22. Ten and a half months, start to finish, and it will not see its first birthday.

The fund holds about $722,000. Roughly 8.2 million dogecoin worth about $688,000 by its own website.

Put that next to a number from yesterday. American spot bitcoin funds had $282.56 million leave in one session. This entire fund, every dollar in it, is a quarter of one percent of what walked out of the bitcoin ETFs on Thursday afternoon.

Bitwise did not blame the assets. The stated reason is optimising its product range to meet evolving investor needs, which is the sentence a company writes when the real one is that nobody came. In November the chief executive said dogecoin holders wanted the benefit of exposure in an ETP format. They did not.

Here is the useful part, and it is not about dogecoin. The last two years ran on an argument that access creates demand — that the thing holding an asset back is the absence of a ticker, and once the wrapper exists the money follows. This is what that argument looks like when it is wrong. The wrapper was built. It was listed, it was tradeable in any brokerage account in the country, and it gathered $722,000.

An ETF is a claim on something somebody else holds. It is only ever worth what the thing inside it is worth, and no amount of packaging makes the inside worth more. That is the same sentence whether the wrapper holds dogecoin or bitcoin. The difference is what happens when you take the wrapper away.
