$6.4 BILLION IN BITCOIN OPTIONS EXPIRE FRIDAY MORNING — RIGHT AS WARSH TAKES THE JACKSON HOLE STAGE — 62% OF THE BETS ARE ALREADY WORTHLESS

Friday morning, 08:00 UTC, $6.44 billion in Bitcoin options expire on Deribit. 81,700 contracts. “Billion” does a lot of work in that headline. Here is what actually happens to most of them: New Market Trading CEO Frank Hepworth says it plainly — expiry weeks always sound scarier than they are, and about 62% of contracts expire worthless. The price where the most money loses the most money sits at $68,000 to $70,000. Bitcoin is trading near $79,000, nine to eleven thousand dollars above that number. That gap is the whole story. A trader who bought a bet that Bitcoin would fall to $68,000 by Friday is not moving the market. He is closing out a mistake. The heaviest open positions sit at $75,000 and $80,000, which just means more people bet correctly than incorrectly this month. None of this touches the coin itself. Options expire. Contracts expire. The 21 million cap does not expire, and neither does the Bitcoin sitting in cold storage while Wall Street settles its side bets. Same morning, Fed Chair Warsh takes the stage at Jackson Hole. That is the event actually worth watching. The options desk just clears its board first.
