THE GLOBAL CRYPTO ATM COUNT FELL TO 27,358 — 587 MACHINES CAME OUT SINCE 2026-07-08 AND 476 OF THEM STOOD IN THE UNITED STATES

A machine that takes a twenty and hands back bitcoin is the plainest on-ramp there has ever been. No bank, no application, no waiting for someone to decide you are the right kind of customer. Since 2026-07-08 the world has 587 fewer of them. 476 of those came out in the United States, which is 81.1 percent of the removals while holding 71.4 percent of the installed base. Indiana banned them outright. Minnesota banned them. Tennessee prohibited them and a federal court turned down the emergency challenge. Vermont extended its moratorium on new kiosks.

The stated reason is fraud against old people, and the fraud is real. But look at what the remedy does. It does not go after the caller who talks a widow into a withdrawal. It closes the counter. The people who lose the counter are the ones who were using it for what it is for, which is converting cash into an asset nobody can freeze once it lands. Those people mostly do not have a brokerage account. That was the point.

These kiosks were never the permissionless part of bitcoin. They are licensed money transmitters with cameras and identity checks, some of the most heavily surveilled retail in the country. That is what makes the number worth reading. The thing being legislated out is the compliant version. What remains for a person with cash and no bank is a private trade, which is the outcome nobody voted for and everybody should have predicted.

27,358 machines is where the count stood in 2021. From the 38,708 peak the network is down 11,350, or 29.3 percent. Somebody decided the safest number of doors is fewer. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $83,015.
