THE FED RAISED RATES A QUARTER POINT — “THE COMMITTEE WILL DELIVER PRICE STABILITY” — AND CUT THE PART THAT SAYS HOW

Read the whole thing and you can time it on a kitchen clock. The Federal Open Market Committee voted 12 to 0 to raise the target range a quarter point, to 3.75 to 4 percent, and then it stopped talking. Three short paragraphs. By my own count, 114 words in the statement itself; Bank of America, per MarketWatch, puts the release at 130 and calls it the shortest since 2007. Either way, the Fed said the least on the day it did the most.

What got cut is the part that matters. A normal statement tells you what the Committee is watching and what would make it move again — the promise you can actually check. This one carries none of it. No path, no named vote, no timeline. In their place sits a line a central bank almost never writes: “The Committee will deliver price stability.” Not aim for. Not work toward. Deliver. Two sentences earlier the same statement admits inflation “remains elevated.” So here is a promise with the caveats sanded off, made by the people who print the money it is about. Brevity is not confidence; it is fewer places to be pinned down. Yesterday we ran the 12-0 hike and the blank dot Chairman Warsh filed. Today the Fed handed over the receipt with the terms left blank. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $79,208.
