TWO CENTRAL BANKS RAISED THE PRICE OF THEIR MONEY THIS WEEK — BITCOIN CLEARED $80,000 ANYWAY — THE BID WENT TO THE MONEY NO ONE PRINTS

Bitcoin cleared $80,000 on September 18, up about 5 percent on the day, and the tidy explanations are all true and all small. US spot bitcoin funds took in $159.5 million on September 17 after bleeding $450.4 million and $295.9 million the two days before, so the flows turned. Roughly $345 million in positions were liquidated in a day after the Fed moved, and the larger share were shorts, $208 million against $137 million in longs, so the people betting down got run over. Treasury yields eased. Fine. Those are the sparks.

Here is the fire. In the same 48 hours, the Federal Reserve raised its rate to 3.75 to 4 percent and the Bank of Japan raised its own to 1.25 percent, the highest in 31 years. Two of the biggest central banks on earth made their money more expensive to borrow in the same week, and the yen still fell and bitcoin still got bought. Read that slowly. When a higher rate does not make people want the currency more, the market is telling you the problem is not the rate, it is the currency. So the bid went where no committee sets the number and no one prints the next batch. No target here and no victory lap. Just the tell: they raised rates, and the money they cannot raise got bought. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $80,125.
