GALAXY PUTS A NUMBER ON THE COLDCARD HACK — 1,789 BTC GONE, 87% JUST SITTING THERE
Galaxy Research attributes 1,789.28 BTC — about $114.7 million from 8,865 addresses — to the Coldcard hardware-wallet exploit. Head of research Alex Thorn: “attackers have not spent 1,561 Bitcoin, or 87.3% of the attributed losses.” The coins sit in collection addresses; some later moved through CoinJoin and peel chains, and Galaxy handed the addresses to exchanges and law enforcement. The Technologist read: they got the coins off the device and then hit the hard part. Spending 1,561 traceable Bitcoin in public is a different problem than taking them. The ledger does not forget — which was the whole point.
