ONE OF THE THREE LEDGER-DRAIN ADDRESSES SENT OUT 9.64 BITCOIN ON THE NIGHT OF OCTOBER 9 — THE COINS KEPT HOPPING WITHIN THE HOUR — THE OTHER TWO STILL HOLD 203.79 BITCOIN
The first coins have moved. One of the three bitcoin addresses the investigator Specter tied to the Ledger reseller drain, bc1qgqhe…d26n, sent out everything it held on the night of October 9. Two transactions, in blocks 970,696 and 970,697, at 8:17 and 8:41 PM ET. One paid 4.69 bitcoin to a new address, the other 4.95 to another. That’s 9.64 bitcoin out.
They didn’t sit. Within the hour both new addresses were paying out again, in pieces of 0.61, 1.21 and 3.74 bitcoin to more fresh addresses. That’s the usual shape of someone putting distance between coins and where they came from.
The other two addresses haven’t moved a sat. At block 970,771 they hold 92.51 and 111.28 bitcoin, 203.79 together. The third was always the odd one: it started collecting on October 7 and was still taking deposits after Ledger’s warning. Loss estimates keep climbing. Bitquery counts $92.9 million across 311 addresses and the analyst Yfarmx $93.4 million across 471, according to Bitcoin.com. Ledger hasn’t confirmed either number or a cause.
The chain says who moved and when. It still can’t say how the keys got out. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $82,735.
