JOBS PRINT RUNS FIVE TIMES HOTTER THAN THE TREND — LAST MONTH’S ‘COLLAPSE’ GOT REVISED AWAY — RATE-HIKE BETS FIRM, BITCOIN SLIPS UNDER $80K

Chart: August added 162,000 jobs while the prior twelve months averaged 31,000 a month. Bars show the 12-month average, revised June and July, and August in orange.
The scariest jobs number of the summer didn’t survive one round of new data.
The Fed’s excuse for sitting still was a weak job market. This morning’s report took the excuse away: 162,000 new jobs in August, five times the average of the last twelve months. Rate-hike bets firmed within minutes, and Bitcoin gave up $1,900 before most people finished their coffee. But read the whole card. One hot month against a year that averaged 31,000 is a spike, not a new trend — restaurants and school hiring did most of the work, and tech and media kept cutting. And July is the real lesson: the 23,000-job LOSS everyone panicked over last month got revised into a 21,000 GAIN. Traders who bet on a single monthly print got burned twice in thirty days. The four-year clock didn’t move either time.
Chart: Bitcoin 15-minute prices on September 4. Price held near $81,300 overnight, then fell to a low of $79,385 in the 15 minutes after the 8:30 AM jobs report.
KEY RECEIPTS UPDATE 10:30 AM ET: CoinDesk checked all 79 jobs-report days since 2020 — Bitcoin’s average move is 2.1%, normal for any day, and it closed higher on 39 of them, lower on 40. A coin flip, historically. Today’s drop is holding so far: ~$79,400 at last check.
Payrolls: +162,000 in August vs. a +31,000 monthly average over the prior 12 months (BLS).
Unemployment: unchanged at 4.1%. Wages: up 0.3% on the month, 3.1% on the year.
The revisions: July went from -23,000 to +21,000; June from +20,000 to +31,000. Combined, 55,000 jobs that earlier reports said didn’t exist.
Where the jobs were: restaurants and bars +59,000, local school jobs +42,000, factories +16,000. Information (tech, media, publishing) lost 23,000.
Bitcoin: fell from $81,336 to a low of $79,385 in the 15 minutes after the 8:30 AM release; ~$79,400 as this published (Crypto.com 15-minute data).
Fed context: the September 18 meeting was near a coin flip on a hike after Waller’s comments — this print leans it toward the hike.
