YEN RESCUE ROUND TWO — SUSPECTED BOJ BUYING DRAGS THE DOLLAR TO 99 — BITCOIN TAKES THE OTHER SIDE AT $81,000

A government spent three days buying its own currency to move it five points. The hardest money didn’t need the help.
Three days ago the yen broke 160 and the Bank of Japan published its bond-buying calendar. Now the other arm of the machine is working: suspected intervention dragged dollar-yen to 155.4, the dollar index fell to 99, and Bitcoin took the other side — up 5% to $81,000. Betting markets price a 98% chance the BOJ raises rates September 18. The pattern rhymes with late 2024: intervene, then hike, then watch the borrowed-yen trades unwind. Strategy’s stock rode the move up 8.6%, though its STRC preferred still sits under par at $97.80. What changed this week: nothing about Bitcoin, everything about the money it’s priced in. A government spent three days buying its own currency to move it five points. The hardest money didn’t need the help.
KEY RECEIPTS Bitcoin rallied 5% in U.S. trading Thursday to $81,000 — near last month’s highs (CoinDesk/Cointelegraph data).
Dollar-yen fell to 155.4 from 158.5 Wednesday on continued suspected Bank of Japan buying; the U.S. Dollar Index dropped to 99.
Polymarket odds of a BOJ rate HOLD collapsed from 12% to 1% — a 25-basis-point hike Sept 18 is priced at 98%.
The Macro Paper: “In the last 24 hours, USD/JPY has dropped almost 2.5%, which doesn’t happen without any major intervention” — and notes the Q3 2024 parallel, when the BOJ intervened and hiked together.
Strategy (MSTR) rose 8.6% Wednesday, up 70% from its late-June lows, still down ~10% on the year. STRC preferred trades at $97.80 vs $100 par.
Arthur Hayes’ long-held read: the Fed’s FIMA repo facility can hand Japan dollars against Treasury collateral — liquidity-positive if drawn. No draws yet; Bessent raised the option in late July.
UPDATE (FRI SEP 4, 12:37 AM ET): Fed Governor Waller said he would support holding rates if price pressures keep easing — September hike odds collapsed to roughly a coin flip from above 63% (CME FedWatch). Bitcoin held above $81,000 into Friday Asia trading, up ~4% in 24 hours. U.S. spot Bitcoin funds took in ~$277M Thursday (provisional). The yen pared to 156.35 after touching 155.30.
