YEN BREAKS 160 — SAME MORNING, BANK OF JAPAN POSTS ITS ¥2.5 TRILLION MONTHLY BOND-BUY CALENDAR
One of these systems publishes a fixed supply. The other publishes a fixed buying schedule.
Japan’s currency fell through the line where the government starts panic-buying it. Hours later the Bank of Japan published its shopping list: ¥2.5 trillion of its own government’s bonds, every month, on a printed schedule you can read like a bus timetable. Bessent calls the yen move “pretty well contained.” Bitcoin sat near $78,000 — off 1% on the day, up 1% on the week, while the third-largest currency on earth made new lows. One of these systems publishes a fixed supply. The other publishes a fixed buying schedule. Savers get to pick.
KEY RECEIPTS
The yen fell through 160 per dollar Monday and traded near that level in Tokyo — the zone where strategists see government buying starting (161, then 162–163).
July saw the first coordinated U.S.–Japan yen buying since 1998. More than half those gains are already gone.
Same morning, the Bank of Japan published its updated bond-buying schedule: ¥2.5 trillion of Japanese government bonds per month through September, dates listed like a bus timetable (BOJ PDF, Aug 31).
Treasury Secretary Bessent called the yen moves “pretty well contained” and said no joint intervention is needed. Friday he warned a disorderly yen could push U.S. interest rates higher.
Bitcoin traded just under $78,000 — down under 1% on the day, up about 1% on the week (CoinDesk data).
The dollar's climb came on rate-hike bets after Fed Chair Warsh's Jackson Hole remarks.
