Bitcoin Knots announced the exit ramp: a new proof-of-work algorithm will be selected at 14:00 UTC Tuesday Aug 11 through a deterministic random process running in the Knots Discord strategy channel. This is the post-BIP-110 fallback the Knots camp had been drafting since Saturday’s fork failed at block 961,632 with 2.6% miner signal. The BIP-110 attempt was a mandatory-signaling soft-fork. This is different — a new PoW is an actual chain split with a genuinely separate SHA-256 mining ecosystem.
WHY DETERMINISTIC-RANDOM SELECTION MATTERSA deterministic random process means the algorithm is selected via cryptographic verifiability, not human choice. Any observer can verify the selection was fair. This bypasses the political question of which PoW — RandomX, ProgPoW, kHeavyHash — the Knots camp prefers. The camp is delegating the choice to math. Whether that works technically is a separate question from whether it works socially. Knots is betting that verifiable neutrality of selection carries the ecosystem case for adoption.
The BIP-110 collapse taught the Knots camp a specific lesson: coordination is harder than protocol. The 2.6% miner signal wasn’t about the technical merit of restricting non-financial data on Bitcoin transactions. It was about miner-side coordination costs on a soft-fork that required 55% support. A new PoW sidesteps the coordination problem entirely by not asking the existing miner set for permission. The tradeoff: you lose network-effect security from Bitcoin’s SHA-256 hashrate. You gain agency over the block-template rules.
WHAT’S ACTUALLY AT STAKEThe philosophical position Dashjr articulated is not going away with the sabbatical: Bitcoin should filter non-financial data (Ordinals, inscriptions, arbitrary CBOR blobs). That position has real technical merit and real philosophical weight for Maximalist-tier operators. It just lost the BIP-110 vote. The new-PoW exit is that position looking for a network that will accept it. Whether it survives independently — whether the exit ramp leads to a viable chain or a philosophical statement — is the year-two question.
The operator-class read: the network kept clearing blocks. Bitcoin will not adopt BIP-110. Bitcoin will keep processing whatever the miner majority accepts. That is the whole point of Bitcoin. The Knots exit exists because the sovereignty philosophy Dashjr represented deserves its own experimental surface. Whether the market adopts it, funds it, or forgets it is a separate question from whether the exit ramp itself should exist. Every Bitcoin operator watching this should hold both truths: Bitcoin’s neutrality won, and the losing camp still deserves a coherent path.
