LAYERTREE PUTS MANY OWNERS IN ONE BITCOIN OUTPUT — A 1,020 VB EXIT NO OPERATOR CAN BLOCK — EVERY TIER NEEDS OPCODES BITCOIN HAS NOT ACTIVATED

Lightning Labs developer Olaoluwa Osuntokun published LayerTree on October 15, 2026, per Bitcoin.com. It is a design for many people to share one bitcoin output, with each balance kept off chain in a Merkle-sum tree. A member who wants out does not ask the operator. A covenant checks the member's proof and releases the coins.

None of it works on bitcoin yet. The project site says its scripts need opcodes "that have been proposed but not activated." Each of its four tiers needs a different set: OP_CAT, OP_TWEAKADD (BIP-449), OP_CHECKSIGFROMSTACK (BIP-348), OP_TX or OP_CHECKCONTRACTVERIFY (BIP-443). The cheapest exit needs one more, a Merkle-sum opcode that the site says "nobody has proposed yet."

The costs are checkable. A plain spend of a single-owner output is about 111 vB. Leaving a LayerTree of 65,536 slots costs about 1,020 vB, about nine times as much, and that price does not grow as members join. Leaving an Ark-style tree of the same size costs about 2,511 vB. These are the project's own simulator numbers, not results on a live network.

Checkable versus trusted: the operator controls who gets in but cannot block a valid exit, Bitcoin.com reports. Members still have to check their balance records before they deposit, or funds can be stuck for good. And if everyone leaves at once, they all bid for the same block space. A proof you can verify only helps if there is room on chain to use it. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $81,870.
