LEDGER TOLD BUYERS FROM ONE RESELLER TO MOVE TO A NEW SEED — 211 BITCOIN SIT UNSPENT IN THREE ADDRESSES AN INVESTIGATOR TIED TO THE DRAIN — ONE WAS STILL TAKING DEPOSITS AFTER LEDGER’S WARNING ON OCTOBER 9
At 13:32 UTC on October 9, 2026, Ledger said it is investigating reports of lost funds from users in South East Asia who bought devices from one reseller. Its own post spells the name two ways, CryptoBillis and CryptoBilis. Ledger asked the reseller to pause all sales and shipments. Buyers from the last 90 days who have not set up yet should not start, and those who have should “consider moving assets to a new Ledger signer (with new seed).” Ledger gave no cause and no loss figure.
The loss number comes from one place. At 12:24 UTC, the investigator Specter posted that he had traced inflows from hundreds of victim wallets across Ethereum, Tron and Bitcoin, put the total at $86 million or more, and listed ten addresses. Bitcoin.com News, citing his data, put the bitcoin share near $17.5 million. Nobody has confirmed the total. CoinDesk raised one possible cause, a device that arrives with a recovery phrase the thief already knows, and said nothing confirms it yet.
The bitcoin part can be checked, so we checked it. Three of Specter's addresses are on bitcoin. At block 970,646 they held 211.2 bitcoin, and not one coin had left. Two of them took in 122 deposits from 122 different addresses in blocks 970,590 and 970,591, between 05:54 and 06:15 UTC, hours before Ledger spoke. Emptying that many wallets inside 21 minutes fits someone who already held the keys. It does not show how they got them.
The third address does not fit the same pattern. It started taking deposits at 14:41 UTC on October 7, two days before the reports, took 108 on October 8, and its latest confirmed deposit landed at 14:38 UTC on October 9, an hour after Ledger’s warning. Thirteen more, 2.17 bitcoin, sat unconfirmed when we looked. The chain cannot tell us whether every one of those is a victim. A hardware wallet only protects you if the seed was made on the device in your hand. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $82,682.
