RETAIL SALES BEAT EVERY FORECAST — GAS STATION RECEIPTS ROSE 21% WHILE GASOLINE ROSE 27.4% — THE DOLLARS WENT UP BECAUSE THE PRICES DID
Retail sales for August came in at $773.9 billion, up 1.2% on the month and 6.0% on the year, above every forecast economists had published. That is the headline, and it is true. Here is the part that ran underneath it.
Gas cost 21.0% more than it did in August 2025. Over those same twelve months the gasoline price index rose 27.4%. Both numbers come from the federal government, six days apart, Commerce on September 16 and Labor on September 11. Put them next to each other and the receipts say people are handing over more dollars and driving away with less fuel.
Strip gasoline out and the month was still up 1.1%, so this is not a story about one category carrying everything. It is a story about what the word “up” is doing. A number that rises because a price rose is not the same number as one that rises because somebody bought more. The headline treats them as the same. July was quietly revised from down 0.6% to down 0.5%, which nobody will mention.
Spending is counted in dollars. The dollar is the thing being measured against. When the ruler moves, the measurement is a report on the ruler.
