BITCOIN GETS A QUANTUM-PROOF SIGNATURE — BUT THE MATH ISN'T PROVEN YET
Jonas Nick just showed his work, and that’s the part worth noticing. SHRINCS is a new way to sign Bitcoin transactions that doesn’t rely on the elliptic curve math a quantum computer could someday break — it leans on plain old SHA-256 hashing instead, the same hash function Bitcoin has trusted since day one. Blockstream already ran it for real on Liquid back in March, moving actual coins with actual signatures, not a lab demo. But the tradeoffs are real. The fast, compact version needs your wallet to remember which keys it already used, like a checkbook you can never lose track of — restore your seed to a new device and you fall back to bigger, slower signatures. Run the numbers and the network slows down too: about three transactions per second instead of today’s six and a half. And Nick says so himself, right in the proposal: the formal security proof isn’t finished. No independent cryptanalysis has torn into it yet. That’s not a red flag, that’s how real engineering gets published — show the design, show the cost, show what’s still unproven, and let other people try to break it before a trillion dollars rides on it. Trust isn’t declared here; it’s earned, proof by proof.
