Two researchers built a bitcoin transaction that skips elliptic-curve math entirely. It leans on hashing, the same one-way math that locks up a bitcoin address in the first place. They pushed it through a mining pool’s own submission pipe because the network’s normal filters did not know what to make of it, and it landed in block 964,199 for about two hundred dollars in computer time. No fork. No vote. No new rules. That is the part worth sitting with: the tool for surviving a quantum computer was already sitting inside bitcoin’s existing rulebook, waiting for someone to actually use it. It does not fix the older addresses still holding exposed public keys, and it does not make wallets support it tomorrow. What it proves is narrower and more useful than a paper promise: verification beats vibes. You do not have to trust anyone’s whitepaper math, you can watch the block explorer and count the confirmations yourself. The scheme burns more space and more fees than a normal spend, which is the honest price of a bigger security margin. Whether the network eventually builds an easier on-ramp for signatures like this one is a separate fight for a separate day. Purity is not a security model; architecture is.
