Anthropic just wrote a $45 billion check — $7.5 billion a year for six years — to Nscale for 460 megawatts of AI computing power on a 2,250-acre campus in Mason County, West Virginia. The site runs entirely on natural gas from Caterpillar generators, off the public grid — West Virginia’s first state-certified AI microgrid. That is not an AI company’s idea. That is the Bitcoin miner playbook, word for word: find cheap energy, build behind the meter so nobody can throttle you, and rent the output at a fat spread. Bitcoin miners wrote this book with a few hundred megawatts and thin margins. Anthropic just financed the sequel with $45 billion and Nvidia’s newest chips. The money is bigger. The land, the gas contracts, and the generator backlog are the same ones the mining industry has been competing for all year. Riot already rents its buildings to Anthropic.
