BITCOIN ETFS SHED $485 MILLION ON OCTOBER 7 — IBIT WAS $208 MILLION OF IT — FOUR DAYS OF OCTOBER INFLOWS, GONE IN ONE SESSION

October’s first four sessions brought in $321.6 million. One session took all of it back and more. The month stands at minus $163.3 million through October 7. SoSoValue, as CoinDesk reports it, has the day at $487.1 million, the most since June 25, and 2.1 standard deviations away from a 90-day average of about $92 million a day coming in. September brought in about $2.65 billion. The year is still up $717 million.

Two other things happened on October 7. The U.S. government moved 8,428 bitcoin to Coinbase Prime, and bitcoin traded down to $82,740 on Crypto.com, its low for the month so far. Three things on one day are not a cause, and we are not claiming one.

Look at who was selling. An ETF holder owns a share in a brokerage account, not a coin. When that holder wants out, the fund meets it by selling bitcoin or handing it to a dealer, and the holder gets dollars. The person holding the coin outside the fund answers to nobody’s redemption window. A fund share is fast to buy and fast to leave. On October 7 it left. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $81,987.
