BITCOIN ETFS LOST $679 MILLION IN THE WEEK TO OCTOBER 9 — BLACKROCK’S IBIT STILL NETTED $1.1 MILLION — FIDELITY’S FBTC WAS $380 MILLION OF THE EXIT

The week opened down $89.8 million on October 5 and up $118.8 million on October 6. Then October 7 took out $484.9 million, the day we covered on October 8, and October 8 took another $244.1 million, $197.1 million of it from FBTC. October 9 brought $21.1 million back. The week before, September 28 to October 2, brought in $241.1 million. Bitcoin.com, on its own count, puts the week at $681 million out and says it ended a three-week inflow streak.

The selling was not spread evenly. IBIT took in $69.9 million and $122.0 million early in the week, gave back $207.7 million on October 7, and ended almost exactly where it started. FBTC had outflows on four of the five days and none on the fifth. Grayscale’s GBTC, the fund that still charges 1.50%, lost $47.5 million.

Follow the money. A fund flow is a broker’s ledger moving. When FBTC holders sell, the fund redeems shares by selling bitcoin or handing it to a dealer, and the coins go to whoever is on the other side. A week like this tells you who left a wrapper. It does not tell you who left bitcoin, and it says nothing about the holders who never needed a wrapper to begin with. At the time of this writing, bitcoin was $81,650.
