“NEAR THE TOP OF A RANGE IT NEVER HOLDS FOR LONG” — BITCOIN AND GOLD HIT RECORD LOCKSTEP AS GOLD DROPS 6% IN SIX SESSIONS — MOVING TOGETHER IS NOT GOING THE SAME PLACE

The Block ran the numbers Tuesday morning: bitcoin and gold are moving up and down together more tightly than at any point on record, with the 30-day reading at 0.8. Two hard assets, one complaint, everybody worried about the dollar getting watered down. Now look at where they actually went. Gold futures settled at $4,697.80 on August 24 and trade near $4,420 now, a drop of about 6% in six sessions, while bitcoin finished August up 25%, its best month since November 2024. Both are true at once. A correlation reading tells you the daily wiggles line up. It does not tell you the two end up anywhere near each other. Moving together is not going the same place. Bitfinex's desk said it plainly three days ago: the link sits “near the top of a range it never holds for long,” and when two things track this closely, “something usually forces them apart.” The Block notes the last two times this reading spiked, bitcoin ran 172% and then roughly 350%. That is two occasions, not a pattern, and we will say so, because we said the same thing about September this morning and we do not switch rules between stories. What an operator takes from this is not a buy signal. It is a question about which one you are holding when the split comes. One is a metal somebody else has to store for you. The other one settles on a Sunday. Gold and bitcoin are not friends. They are alibis for the same complaint.
