DALIO BACKS BITCOIN — DEBT COULD HIT $60 TRILLION IN A DECADE, “3 YEARS GIVE OR TAKE 2” TO A CRISIS
Ray Dalio wants gold and a bit of bitcoin. He says U.S. debt could reach $60 trillion within ten years. He says a full debt crisis could hit in three years, give or take two.
Dalio runs Bridgewater Associates. He posted an analysis on LinkedIn on Aug. 21. He said non-government money should hold up as currencies weaken. He named gold. He named bitcoin.
“I expect non-government-produced monies like gold and bitcoin to do relatively well.”

Dalio put a number on the debt. He wrote: “After taking the recently passed budget reconciliation bill into account, most of the independent assessors of the situation project that the debt in 10 years will be $55-60 trillion.” He put a clock on the crisis window at three years, give or take two, if the fiscal path does not change. The clock and the number both come from a summary of his book “How Countries Go Broke: The Big Cycle.”
He also gave allocation advice. He said to underweight bonds. He said to overweight gold and “a bit of bitcoin.” He put the gold weight at 10 to 15 percent of a portfolio.
“Underweighting debt assets like bonds, and overweighting gold and a bit of bitcoin.”

The receipts back the setup. Total federal debt crossed $40 trillion on Aug. 18. Treasury figures released Aug. 19 confirmed it. The Congressional Budget Office projects a $1.9 trillion deficit for fiscal 2026. Debt held by the public reaches 120 percent of GDP by 2036 on current path.
Dalio’s bitcoin support is measured, not full-throated. He still prefers gold as the more established monetary asset. He has flagged concerns about bitcoin’s code vulnerabilities, government controls, transaction transparency, and central-bank reserve appetite. This is a directional shift from his 2020 skepticism. It is not a Saylor-tier conviction. The story is the direction of travel from Bridgewater, not the size of the position.
The tie-in is the debt anchor. Bessent’s Monday 2 PM ET presser at the White House lands on the same $40 trillion debt figure. Kendrick, Kiyosaki and Grayscale are already building on it. Dalio adds a Bridgewater signature to a pile that keeps getting deeper.
ONE THING TO KNOW
Dalio is not calling bitcoin the answer. He is calling gold the answer with a bitcoin sleeve. What matters is the source. Bridgewater built its name on debt-cycle math. When Dalio names bitcoin in the same sentence as gold, it moves the frame. That is what advances here, not the size of the allocation.

Bridgewater says own gold.
And a bit of bitcoin.
The cap is still twenty-one million.
