TREASURY STANDS UP A QUANTUM TASK FORCE WITH A DIGITAL-ASSET DESK — THE PROTOCOL ALREADY HAS ITS ANSWER MOVING — MOST CHAINS HAVE NONE

The Treasury stood up a quantum-readiness task force on August 24 under Executive Order 14412, and one of its three workstreams points straight at digital assets. Strip the jargon and the actual threat is simple: “harvest now, decrypt later.” Adversaries collect encrypted material today and wait for a quantum computer big enough to open it — and on a public blockchain, the exposed targets are old coins whose public keys are already visible, including the earliest pay-to-public-key coins that have sat untouched since the beginning. The Technologist read: the interesting split is not government versus Bitcoin, it is Bitcoin versus everything else on the shelf. Bitcoin has a quantum-safe upgrade path actually moving through its open process — the SHRINCS proposal published two days after this task force launched is the proof — along with a public review culture that argues about tradeoffs in the open. Most other chains have no comparable process, no proposal, and in many cases no way to even hold the vote. The state just put quantum migration on the policy clock. The protocol was already on its own clock, which runs slower and finishes stronger. Watch the process, not the press releases.
